The notion of a "free and unbiased press", particularly a free American mainstream press, independent of governmental bias and manipulation via "press release" or "expert testimonials", a press adversarial to government, is a false notion. There are several examples in history as proof and more recent issues of substantiation as well. Much of mainstream American media ran with the story that terrorism had been reduced since the Bush Administration initiatives had been employed - a story supplied by the administration to the media. Further and responsible investigation eventually revealed that the data was a lie, an easily exposed lie if the data had been reviewed by journalists in a rush to publish the latest, freely supplied propaganda for the masses. The anomaly of "liberal versus conservative" discussion of media bias is a smoke screen that invokes the illusion of critical thought followed by rebuttal. The intensity of debate, with the more "expert" testimonials the better, makes indoctrination more thorough as the onlooker believes he/she understands all sides of the issues at hand. The independent thinker, ergo, must separate his/her mind from the dogmatic tenets of officially endorsed positions, "talking points" and party doctrine EQUALLY as from the formalized criticism that arises from the seeming opposition. As such, tacit and subliminal assumption, presuppositions if you will, being the most insidious and effective of propaganda tools in a non-authoritarian social system can be effectively exposed and debated openly. Readily accepted tenets brought from beneath the veils of carefully chosen words such as "noble" or "humanitarian" causes, "national interests", "defense threats" and the largest illusions of "free enterprise" and "social responsibility". The woefully inadequate American media as a whole does not publish information readily available to the rest of the world, only what they think we Americans need to see... based upon ratings/demographics and the short attention span of those who need to be entertained in order to absorb information. Besides, less than 6% of Americans have passports and are clueless as to how Americans are viewed abroad so the media in America has some leeway in what they print and editorialize for effect ... realizing all the while that most Americans are too lazy to seek any outside source for news, other than their local paper and favorite six o'clock talking heads selection of daily sound bites. Below you will find links to various press organizations from various countries around the world - written in English. Some links may require you to click a request to view in English, however these instances are very few. The next time you see some issue in the news that concerns you, go to one of these sources to get a different perspective on events both inside the US and within other nations. Otherwise, you'll rely of the Fair and Balanced News from the U.S. - right? WRONG! Feel free to save this page and keep it wherever you like so that you can become a better informed American. Feel free to submit any other source to us as well.
