Clinton and McCain win in New Hampshire
________________________________

January 9, 2008 | Results from the 2008 New Hampshire primaries proved the media pundits wrong as Hillary Clinton beat Barack Obama by 7,667 votes (2%) while the pundits were predicting an Obama victory by as much as 10%. The GOP side was somewhat more accurate with McCain surging well past the Iowa winner Huckabee and whipping Romney by 5%.

The lament among the pundits today - at least those with only a smidgen of pie on their faces - is that Hillary's tearful moment brought the female vote back into her corner. It would seem, looking over the poll data available, that while the female voters had an impact in Hillary's victory, it was not seemingly enough to overcome the unrealistic projections of an Obama victory. It may well be that the media hype may not have as much effect as some may believe.

The McCain victory was predicted, and is being attributed to older American voters. However, exit poll data reveals otherwise as Mitt Romney received the highest percentage (44%) of votes from voters 65 and older with McCain picking up 40%.

Overall, Giuliani edged out Ron Paul by one percentage point as Huckabee hovered only two points above Giuliani and 21 points short of Romney. Ron Paul supporters were angered by an election day article in The New Republic entitled "Angry White Man", that painted Paul in a rather unfavorable light by resurrecting the Ron Paul Newsletter controversy from 2001.

Edwards showing was less impressive than in Iowa last week and it appears by looking at the percentages in New Hampshire this week that the Clinton surge may have primarily impacted the Edwards campaign. Richardson and Kucinich again gave very poor showings after receiving relatively no media attention in comparison to the media darlings with the bigger monied campaigns.

If exit polls are any better than the poll projections that went askew, you can view them from the links below and draw you own conclusions without having to be told what to think by your favorite talking head.
