March 4, 2008 | The latest National Rifle Association (NRA) recruitment letter is said to be the "Final Notice". It is probably not due to the cost of paper, or the loss of trees and subsequent habitat that makes this the grand finale. It is more probable that it is a tactic to catch our attention - much as a car salesman will say, "this car won't be here long at this price - when it's gone - it's GONE".
Basically they are looking for a $25 annual membership fee. It would normally be $35, but Executive VP Wayne LaPierre says, "Your leadership of NRA is so important that I will take $10 off the price of annual membership...". And then there is the assertion made that we have used in the title of this screed, "it's only a matter of time before ALL gun owners are fingerprinted, our homes are searched and we're ordered to turn in our guns". Don't mistake the purpose of this article as slamming the NRA. Not so. We just find the tactics being used by the NRA in their correspondence in order to get members a tad bit insulting - much like the language used when the political parties write asking for money. The saddest element in this otherwise drab appeal to the weakest links is that it probably works better than being completely forthright and providing links to real data to support their assertions. And, if anyone would like to pay the membership fee for us here at CSE, we'll gladly forward the "Free NRA duffel bag" that comes with the membership just for reading at CSE. Here's the letter for your viewing pleasure:
